SPIRITUAL EROSION
There is a process of things being changed called erosion that is both natural and spiritual. Spiritual erosion can culminate in eternal death. Spiritual erosion is more common than believed because of the way it works. Webster’s Dictionary defines erosion as “the process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents.” While natural erosion wears away the surface of the earth, spiritual erosion wears away the truth which then changes Christianity. The very shape of the earth’s surface and the shape of Christianity are altered by erosion.
There are times of flood and wind that changes the natural landscape in moments of time. Some people believe the devil, in his effort to take away convictions and Christian living, will come and say, “I am the devil and I’ve come to kill you spiritually.” No, he comes as a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2), or a wolf in sheep’s clothing (Matthew 7:15) or as the father of lies (John 8:44).
The devil does his evil work when he can find his target asleep or unaware that eroding things are slowly taking away and changing even life and death issues. A very serious truth, for another study, is apostasy. The Bible definition for apostasy is "defection", "departure", "revolt" or "rebellion". Many begin this Christian life strong and true. If one is not careful, they begin to question and defect, depart or even revolt from true convictions and manner of life. The enemy has over 6,000 years of history on how to attack a person who is weakened through this defection. It is usually a slow process. Real values and Godly ways begin to slowly change. It’s sad but true that the taking away of the foundation we were placed on by God through our changing lives is now being taken away.
Have you changed your mind about sin? Is it now easier to overlook and excuse this action against God? Have we developed a compromising spirit with sinners and the world? Do we forsake the assembling of ourselves in true worship and service (Hebrews 10:25)? Time and space prevent the weightier matters of careful study of God’s Word and prayer.
These are serious questions. There is a falling away from the Lord “...for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first...” (2 Thessalonians 2:3). We need to examine ourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). Where there has been an erosion of the things of God, in that self-examination He will show us the erosion in our lives and call us to return to Him. That revelation will save our souls and make us more than conquerors in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37).
